Understand the odds, timelines, and ethical decisions behind every recovery.

Every shot has different signs—and different wait times. Here’s what you need to know before you call a tracker.

What Are the Chances of a Recovery?

Every track is different. Knowing the average success rates for different shot types helps set realistic expectations for both the hunter and the tracker.

No two hits are the same. Trackers use a combination of signs—blood, shot angle, animal behavior, and scent—to determine how long to wait and what the recovery odds are.

This page breaks down:

– Typical wait times by shot placement
– Common blood sign indicators
– How far a wounded animal may travel

🔍 Important Note: These are averages. Some recoveries happen with almost no blood. Others fail despite good sign.

What the blood Tells You

Bright Red, Bubbly Blood

Likely a lung hit. Wait 30–60 minutes. High recovery odds.

Likely a gut shot. Wait 8–12 hours. Call a tracker.

Possibly a liver hit. Wait at least 4–6 hours. Recovery depends on hit angle.

Could be a muscle hit or poor penetration. Recovery is unlikely without a tracker.

đź•’ Recovery Windows by Hit Type

A well-placed shot may lead to a quick recovery, but other wounds need hours—sometimes overnight—to give the animal time to expire.

Jumping the animal too soon is the most common reason for failed recoveries.

How Far Can a Wounded Animal Travel?

Not every track ends in recovery. Sometimes, the most respectful thing a hunter can do is accept the outcome and learn for next time.

Knowing when to stop tracking is as important as knowing when to call.

* If no vital sign is found after a full trail…
*If the wound is superficial…
*If the dog cannot pick up the trail after multiple attempts…

It’s OK to let go. Honor the animal and grow from the experience.

From Trackers

“We’ve recovered deer 18 hours later—because the hunter waited.”

“Some of our best recoveries happened after the hunter marked the site and backed out.”

“You’d be surprised what a good nose can find if we don’t ruin the trail first.”

“That animal would never have been found without a dog.”
